Sides for On Camera with Derek on Tuesday JULY 15th from 7pm to 10pm:
Altered States of Being
Objective:
To teach actors how to portray emotional transitions during states of being —such as drunkenness. This workshop focuses on internal transitions that manifest externally, without resorting to cliché or overacting.
Synopsis:
Few things are harder to play than a state of being. Especially when that state—like being drunk—is often reduced to cheap mimicry. The truth is: people don’t play drunk. They try not to look drunk. And that contradiction is where the acting lives.
In this workshop, actors will explore a range of emotional and psychological conditions—such as intoxication, adrenaline, shock, and dissociation—through the lens of internal motivation, tension, and denial. The goal isn’t to “act” the state—it’s to let the state reveal itself through behavior.
Men and women read for Whip in Flight :
First line is “Did you know Miss Marquez had a drinking problem?”
Last line is “Because I’m an alcoholic.”
pg 142- 145 – print page 143-146
Examples of what not to do:
Birdman
