Learn how to create an Oscar winning performance
How does an actor deal with a NO?

An actor’s life is full of ups and downs. The acting business is where the best people in the world are rejected all the time. It’s a rejection business and you have to make peace with it.
There are times when you can feel on top of the world and there are also times when you can find yourself in a landfill. Every person’s life and career is like that. And if you don’t understand this about life, you’re going to take it to heart every time you’re in the valley.
Being in a valley can be a very wonderful thing sometimes because you don’t have the pressure of the mountaintop and you can learn more about yourself, then. It is a rich soil that will help you climb up and back up the mountain.
You’re always going to have to deal with the uncertainty of where your next job will come from and the insecurity of not knowing if it’s ever going to come at all. Once again you get rejected because you’re too much this or that, you can fill in the blank. You have to be able to remain open, strong, and have faith.
I remember Stella Adler once saying, actors have to have “the soul of a rose and the skin of a rhinoceros.” No matter how many times you are told “NO” you can’t let yourself fall for this. You have to work on staying open, being positive, optimistic and creative.
That means having the soul that Stella said actors need. Don’t get into your shell and never go out to play again. That’s the skin. It’s having thick skin and letting malice, criticism, and jealousy creep in on you. There will always be a percentage of audience, people, and industry critics… that they won’t be like you.
So how do you stay open?
You develop a huge feeling of acceptance for yourself. You keep hearing “Yes” inside you over and over again. Yes to everything you do.
Look at every audition and every job as a learning experience. See what you can get out of each of them, even if you feel like it didn’t go well. Ask yourself what is the lesson of each one? Artists grow from their biggest failures.
The challenge is to overcome them and learn how you feel about yourself and understand how valuable you are, no matter how many times you hear No. Your value as an actor doesn’t lie when you hear that yes, from anyone. The most important yes comes from yourself and you alone.
