5 Essential Tools for the Beginner Actor (and good reminders for the advanced)
As an actor, you’re always training no matter if you’re experienced (professional) or if you’re just starting out. It means, “I have a trade.” You are always on the lookout for deepening your tools. You are looking to keep your instrument alive from responding, open to stimuli. Actors depend on having an instrument that works. It is necessary that you exercise your work instrument. Here are 5 essential tips that you have to work on continuously.
Script Analysis
Collect plays and film scripts and analyze them. Understand script analysis from A to Z. Make a list of events. Relationships, desires, conflicts, and obstacles and looking for what’s not obvious, that’s good script analysis.
Look for the deeper meaning of things. Beat around the bush in your analysis. What could be the additional layers of complexities that exist? These discoveries will lead you to make decisions that are important and that makes you get a better result in your analysis and work
Create the character
You should always be thinking about creating different characters. Keep writing the backstory for the different characters. Create profiles, materials for the character. Keep exploring the role’s corporeality. That’s always the way you figure out what the character is like. What are the most controversial events that could have happened to them? Read lots of biographies, which will inspire you to find the twists and turns of this one’s life. Interview people, ask about their lives, and discover their secrets. It will give you ideas!
Improvisation:
Yes, you have to be able to improvise and think fast. To be able to put it into your own words makes you able to possess the material that is being worked on on a deeper level. Plus, knowing that you can enhance the scene makes you braver, a feeling that you can handle anything. You can have a lot of fun getting out of your head that way and completely forgetting what the next moment is. You really have to trust your impulses and channel them in the most creative way.
The Words
The work in the memory of the lines. If someone comes to see you perform in a play, remember that they’ll ask you cliché questions: How did you learn all those lines? But for some actors, memorization can be a challenge. Analyzing the script, knowing who the character is and improvising the dialogue before committing to the words that are written can be very useful. Again, it’s a muscle that needs to be trained. Memorize a poem, a song, a monologue, a scene each week. Once you understand the intent of the line by saying it and taking ownership of it. Your body has muscle memory, which it remembers. While the improvisation is wonderful, whether Aaron Sorkin or David Mamet wrote the script will have to get it word for word.
Learn how to work in front of the camera
Yes, practice makes perfect. The moment a camera is filming it, everything is different. Learn to see yourself and learn from it. It’s important to understand if the decisions you’re making are the right ones. Look at what your body is doing, look at what your face is doing, see how you take directions and implement adjustments quickly. By trying different options, find out which one is the strongest and the one that serves best.
Each tool mentioned above is a muscle that needs to be worked on continuously, which will lead to strengthening your art.
Once you have that foundation, repetition will deepen your work as an actor. So roll up your sleeves and get to work!
