Casting Call “M.A.S.H.” PROJECT DETAILS
LOGLINE: At a slumber party, 11-year-old Mel is thrown off balance when she is forced into a round of the future telling game, M.A.S.H. Faced with the daunting task of deciding what boy she wants to marry, Mel imagines her future with each suitor and realizes the only person she wants to spend the rest of her life with is her best friend, Grace. Problem is – she must be brave enough to write her name down.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
[MEL] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Female. She/her. ANY ETHNICITY.
Anxious and eager, Mel is desperate to make this sleepover count. With her thick glasses and niche’ interests, Mel only feels like herself when Grace is around. When she realizes why all the potential suitors don’t feel quite right – Mel must harness her courage, despite what her friends might think. LEAD.
[GRACE] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Female. She/her. ANY ETHNICITY. Mel’s favorite person in the whole, wide world. A lovable goof, Grace has an easy confidence that Mel could only dream of. Whether it’s making her a friendship bracelet or standing up to Carla, Grace just wants to make sure Mel is okay – whatever it takes. SUPPORTING.
[CARLA] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Female. She/her. ANY ETHNICITY. 11 going on 21, Carla has been waiting to be a teenager since the day she was born. Confident and brash – Carla has opinions and is not afraid to share them. Although she means well, Carla’s strict rules leave Mel feeling out of place in her own home. SUPPORTING.
[JENNA] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Female. She/her. ANY ETHNICITY. Carla’s second in command, Jenna is always there to happily co-sign Carla’s rules. With misguided concern, Jenna warns Mel that “Dying alone is the worst,” and she needs to see the game through. SUPPORTING.
[MATTY] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Male. He/him. ANY ETHNICITY. Mel’s first potential suitor. A kind kid with a passion for chewing his sleeves. Mel imagines him as a businessman, complete with a suit and goatee – focused solely on paying bills with Monopoly money. SUPPORTING.
[KYLE] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Male. He/him. ANY ETHNICITY. Mel’s second potential suitor. Oozing cool out of his perfectly gelled hair, Kyle is every girl’s dream crush… except for Mel. In her imagination, he plays the perfect husband – but something still feels wrong. SUPPORTING.
[TOBEY] 9yo to 13yo to play 11yo. Male. He/him. ANY ETHNICITY. Mel’s last potential suitor. Tobey is a kid who marches to the beat of his own heavy-metal drum. Surly and stubborn – he is not the ideal partner, much preferring playing with his frogs rather than talking to Mel. SUPPORTING.
