ACTING LESSONS : TIPS ON COLD READING

Backstage_AD_September

Cold reading can sometimes be pretty hectic. The director may change scripts on you, the reader could have a hard time with the words, or maybe you just can’t find the moment. You never know what can happen.

The best advice for cold reading is to stay focused, pick up the arc of the script, and keep it simple. A good director is just trying to get a feel for you and your personality.  A useful tip before a cold-read is to focus in on what the scene is really trying to say. If you stumble on a word here or there, a majority of the time, as long as you get the point across, it’s ok.
Now if you’re body demands physicality, such as a kiss, try not to stay glued to the script. Eye contact and human relation will go way father than sounding like a robot. It should be ok to put the script down when needed.

Many people get tripped up in a cold read because it’s spur of the moment. Relax, be calm, and enjoy the experience! More tips and pointers can be picked up in Michelle Danner’s Acting for the Camera class.
_____________
Los Angeles has a very specific style of acting. It’s great to pick it up by taking some lessons. In the lessons, you’ll learn the in’s and out’s of how Los Angeles views acting as well as create your own perception. I highly encourage anyone in the area to take a class or two.
