Allow your character to live and breathe
When you get your sides, read it from your perspective, from the perspective of the audience, and then read it from the perspective of the character.
What I see too often is actors who focus too much on how authentic they themselves are in their audition, which of course is very important, but not enough on how authentic the character they’re auditioning for is.
Answer the questions: What do I want? What am I going to do to get what I want? What time is it? Where am I? Who am I? Who am I with? Do I have to go through them to get what I want? What’s important about who I am with? That is what anchors you in the relationship and who they are to you emotionally. This is the work of the actor. Make room for the character to live and the story to be told, and when you audition, speak your truth AND your character’s truth.
