Can’t afford acting classes?

When speaking with another actor, my first question is usually, “who have you studied with?” Finding good lessons and experienced teachers is paramount. I feel the key to ‘cheaper’ classes is discovering what works for you, with the exception that you are learning good habits as well as learning to work quickly, correctly, and autonomously as an actor. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t be expecting the teacher to come with you to your audition or a set on the day of shooting because that teacher has done their job properly. It wouldn’t be realistic or necessary because you have learned a good acting technique that works which creates both independent and successful actors!
There are a barrage of acting classes in Los Angeles that range from many different prices, while covering many different techniques. With so many options, I feel it is more beneficial for the actor to find an acting teacher that you are comfortable growing with. As I previously alluded to, there are many acting teachers that will train actors improperly because they are either inexperienced themselves or somewhat delusional about their own discourse and training. These somewhat misguided acting teachers can project their bad habits on to their students and these habits can take equally as much time for you to learn to ‘undo’ as it did for you to learn ‘improperly’ to begin with. As an actor in Los Angeles, you need to find a way to learn while being resourceful with your time, effort, and money. So, make it count!
Do your research. Find out everything you can about the acting classes by speaking with former students, looking up articles, or speaking with the staff at the acting studio or space. Ask questions pertaining to what you think you need or would like to know about the acting teacher at the acting studio before joining. Try requesting to sit-in or auditing a class beforehand to gain a better sense and understanding of what is being offered. Get a feel for their style of teaching and the type of students that you might be working with. Does it meet your standards and expectations or is there a better choice elsewhere?
Yes, there are ‘cheap’ acting lessons out there, but if acting is your career, you may want to get more bang for your buck. Having the right name on your resume can mean getting the part. Agents, managers, and casting directors, do look at resumes when considering who they are going to hire for any given part. Michelle Danner has a great name and wonderful reputation as an acting coach and teacher, so what’s holding you back? Come join the team! Register today at Edgemar.
