How to End Anxiety: The Ultimate Anti Anxiety Toolkit
Anxiety is produced when the brain goes into fight or flight mode. It does that when it perceives a threat. In that state only the negative, the problems, are seen. The main benefit of exercises that get a person out of a state of anxiety into a state of relaxation is that in that state possibilities are seen. In other words, often within only a few minutes, one can see solutions that were simply not perceived before. Beyond inducing a state of calm, that is the true power of relaxation.
The more a person practices these exercises, some of which are from ancient traditions, others are compiled from the latest findings of neuroscience, the more the brain stays in a positive state of mind, enabling a person to make more effective life choices. It’s a positive reinforcing spiral. More calm brings about better decisions brings about a better life situation. This, in turn, induces more calm, induces better choices, and so forth. While we often cannot control what happens to us, we can choose how to respond. As Victor Frankel states, freedom lies in the gap between stimulus and response.
How is this freedom achieved?
I teach a 3 pronged approach.
a) Relaxation Exercises
These exercises make use of the brain’s neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change itself.
The more these are practiced, the more neurogenesis is achieved, meaning the brain produces new neurons and neuronal connections that promote feelings of relaxation and calm. Over time the brain literally changes to become less reactive to negative stimuli and more responsive to positive stimuli.
b) An Ancient Wisdom Practice
This is a non-denominational practice culled from traditions all around the world to get in touch with our own wisdom. The more we connect to our wisdom, the more clarity we have in any given situation. Conversely, when we enter a state of fear, it is akin to being tossed around by ocean waves, we easily become victim to our circumstances. Yet, no matter how high the waves on the surface, the bottom of the ocean is always still. This practice will help a person to experience that stillness, a solid ground to stand on.
c) A Practical Approach to Specific Life Challenges
Sometimes a situation can become so overwhelming that we don’t even know where to start. By breaking it down into manageable pieces, we can develop a step-by-step approach as to how to resolve it. Similarly, by dividing our life into segments, we can isolate problem areas, and solve particular challenges one at a time. Sometimes this can have a cumulative, non-linear effect. By solving one or two difficulties others may resolve themselves.
In summary, by linking steps a), b), and c), i.e. seeing a situation both from the macro and micro perspective, combined with a positive attitude, we develop a holistic approach to resolve our challenges, no matter what our circumstances.
